Amaya Inc subsidiary PokerStars has confirmed that it has been granted a sports betting license by Danish gambling authority Spillemyndigheden.

Issuing a statement, Amaya detailed that the PokerStars brand had been granted a temporary one year sports betting operator licence. PokerStars management will further move to apply for a full five year licence tenure.

The PokerStars brand will be allowed to add sports betting services to its online poker and casino games platform for the licensed Danish online gambling market in 2016.

Eric Hollreiser, VP of corporate communications for Amaya Inc commented on the Spillemyndigheden licensing approval

“We’re pleased to offer sports betting under a licence that ensures local oversight of the industry and allows PokerStars to bring its gaming expertise and high standards of integrity, compliance and security to Danish bettors.”

“This furthers Amaya’s commitment to the responsible growth of online gaming by supporting local regulation that protects players, creates a viable, competitive marketplace and provides revenue for local governments.”

Amaya governance moves to launch its sports betting services in 2016. November saw CEO David Baazov confirm that the operator had acquired a group of domains associated with the brand BetStars.com.

2016 will likely see the launch of a sports betting focused BetStars.com product operated by Amaya.
