GVC Holdings owned operator Sportingbet has responded to claims of unlicensed online betting activity in the newly regulated Irish market claiming a technical oversight was at fault for its continued service.
The operator is alleged to have taken Irish customer bets following the 1 August introduction of new online gambling legislations which require betting and gaming companies to have approved licensing.
Irish media sources had publically reported that Sporctingbet were still taking bets from Irish consumers without an approved license from the new regime.
Responding to the claims Sportingbet countered that it was aware of the problem and that it was taking the necessary steps to solve the matter.
The operator detailed that it had sent communications to the Irish customers advising them to withdraw funds and close accounts. The operator had also stopped accepting Irish player registrations in accordance with the new laws.
Detailing further insight the bookmaker stated that at present it had less than 200 active Irish customers from its total 20,000 Irish legacy player base.
“We have been made aware of a situation in our Irish operations & we are looking into the matter, Our early understanding is that a handful of Irish customers were affected. We are honouring all bets made since 1 August as is our tradition.” Sportingbet commented to the Irish Post
