European sports betting operator Unibet has confirmed that it is in the process of re-applying for a Romanian online gambling licence. The operator sent a communication to media partners and affiliates making them aware of their market intentions. A Unibet Email read

“While Unibet is still analysing the licence requirements/conditions, we would like to let you know that Unibet is in the process of going ahead with its application for a Romanian licence. We will contact those partners currently referring Romanian customers in a separate communication in the coming days with more information on this matter.”

In May 2015 the Romanian Chamber of Deputies introduced its new Online Gambling framework, allowing for the entry of international operators. The new policies were granted favour by President Klaus Iohannis who passed the new conditions into law.

Romania is set to charge a 20% tax charge on online gambling revenues generated by national consumers. However the new policies have been contested by numerous operators due to the attachment of a tax-back amendment on prior revenues for operators seeking to re-enter the market.

At the start of June UK operators William Hill and Ladbrokes announced that they would exit the market, due to the new regulations in place.
