European online sports betting operator NetBet has confirmed that it has re-entered the Romanian igaming market, having been granted approval to operate services by the government.
The operator will restart its player wagering and marketing activities following a 12 month break. In order to comply with Romanian igaming policies and regulations, NetBet announced that it had paid penalties, licensing and authorisation taxes.
In May the Romanian Chamber of Deputies approved the progression of the nation’s online gambling framework. Romania’s government attached a 20% tax duty on online gambling revenues. Furthermore the Romanian government has stated that all operators seeking to gain entry into the market, must pay retrospective taxes on previous activity.
NetBet currently employs 250 staff in the Romanian town of Timisoara. NetBet management stated that regulated markets across Europe would “always be the main target” for its activities as they “provide safety and peace of mind for the players, predictability and a solid environment for operators while the regulator can collect much-needed revenues from taxing these activities”.
Entry into the Romanian market sees NetBet extend its licensed European igaming activities, which include Belgium, France, Spain, UK and Italy
