European sports betting operator Betsson AB has confirmed to industry news source EGR Magazine that it has ceased certain affiliate activity in the Netherlands market.
Betsson, which has Dutch-focused online casino brands Kroon and Oranje in its digital portfolio, informed EGR that it had ceased Dutch-language promotions in order to prevent any legal repercussions in the soon to be regulated market.
The operator has told Dutch media partners that it wishes to comply with current regulations and policies regarding the market, with a view of getting a licence in the future, and has informed affiliates that it will no longer accept players or wagers obtained from Dutch-language promotions.
The Dutch regulator Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) had warned operators in 2014 that they risked the chance to gain licenses if they continued to service consumers ahead of its planned market regulation. Betsson’s decision follows last week’s announcement by KSA that it had strengthened the Dutch advertising code by agreeing new advertising policies with national media operators.
In the build up to introduction of a new online gambling framework for the Netherlands, a number of European betting operators including William Hill and 888 have stepped back from the market in order to meet licensing approval standards.
