The latest industry figures published by Spain regulatory body – Direccion General de Ordenacion del Juego (DGOJ), have demonstrated that the Spanish igaming market grew 10% year on year, as the sector enjoyed a strong opening quarter to 2014.
Total gross gaming revenues for Q1 (figures reported from January 1- 31 March 2014) reached €66.9 million (£56.8 million), up 12% from 2013 figures of €60.9 million (£49.5 million).
The DGOJ stated that a strong sports betting performance had been the key driver for the market, as the vertical accounted for 56% of gaming revenues.
Further good news for the Spanish gaming sector saw an increase in the number of active igaming players. The DGOJ reported a 10% increase, with over 300,000 new players entering the igaming market.
Igaming consultant Eduardo Morales-Hermo commented “Overall the online gaming figures seemed to awaken after the previous quarters and the real winner is sports betting . That trend will most probably continue to drive the increase in Q2 with the last matches of the different football leagues, the Champions League and football World Cup in June,”
