UK racing launches first directory to track the progress of community directives

UK racing has launched its first ‘community directory to highlight the work of key stakeholders that are leading projects and directives to improve the sport’s health, welfare, education, participation and community involvement.

Backed by the British Horseracing Authority (BHA), the directory has been developed by sports charity Racing Together in collaboration with The Racing Foundation and thoroughbred news source Godolphin.

“The Directory maps nationwide activities from over 100 organisations that are harnessing assets to help people develop skills, increase physical activity and to create a more diverse and inclusive sport,” Racing Together detailed in its joint statement.

Marked as a key resource for all UK racing stakeholders, the directory has revealed that over the last 18 months, more than 40,000 people have been involved in programmes run by racecourses, charities, training yards and a range of other industry bodies.

Supporting a deeper community involvement for racing, the BHA noted successful programmes launched to widen the accessibility of racing, which include schemes for mental health and dementia sufferers as well as activities to inspire young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Annamarie Phelps, Chair of the British Horseracing Authority, said: “This Directory is the first of its kind for racing. It will help us understand what is happening already, so that we can work together to align our activities and provide a coherent message about the positive impact of the sport and industry on those it engages with.

“This is just the first phase of a project to recognise the huge positive impact that our people and our horses have on those they interact with and will be valuable to the industry here in the UK and globally to ensure its health and sustainability as we emerge into a new post-Covid future.”

The directory has been published through the Racing Together website, with stakeholders encouraged to add their programmes and schedules to expand the information available to audiences.

Racing’s new community resource includes further updates on the immediate responses of racing businesses and people to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on local communities.
