Budget aftermath isn’t too sweet to George

Following his speech on the Budget William Hill has lengthened the odds for George Osborne to replace David Cameron as leader of the Conservative party.

The Chancellor’s odds have moved from  11/4 to 3/1 whilst Boris Johnson has seen his odds cut from 9/4 to 2/1 favourite.

William Hill Media Relations Director Graham Sharpe said: “Mr Osborne cost us dear by wearing a blue tie – which was 8/11 favourite – and speaking for over 55minutes, another odds-on favourite, and he gave his usual polished performance but we don’t think it will have converted many Boris Johnson supporters.”

He added: “We could also have done without Mr Osborne mentioning the ‘Northern Powerhouse’  and ‘Scotland’- he was a 7/4  and 3/1 chance to do so respectively.”

William Hill is also offering odds of 6/1 that George Osborne will cease being Chancellor this year, and odds of 7/1 that it’ll happen in 2017.

The bookmaker has also tightened its Brexit betting odds following a string of bets, including one £5000 punt from a customer in Devon.  Sharpe said: “We saw a sudden burst of betting interest in the Brexit option, including the £5000 stake, and with over 71% of all bets already being staked on Brexit we were left with little alternative but to tighten up the odds.”

It’s now 15/8 for a Leave vote, and 2/5 for Remain.
