William Hill – Lord Attenborough gaining support to be the face of the £20 note

lordattenbouroughLord Richard Attenborough CBE (29 August 1923 – 24 August 2014 ) is gaining market support to be the next face of the £20 note. William Hill revealed that it has seen significant support for the actor, director and former President of BAFTA.

The bookmaker has shortened Attenborough’s odds from 14/1 to 9/1 to replace Scottish economist Adam Smith. Attenborough is currently the market’s third favourite behind Romantic era cultural figureheads’ William Blake (poet and printmaker) and JMW Turner (landscape painter).

William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly commented on the market

“Since the rather long shortlist was announced, it has been pretty much one way traffic for Richard Attenborough to be the face of the new £20 note and he could be favourite before too long,”

This week Bank of England (BoE) Chief Cashier Victoria Cleland announced the list of eligible candidates for the £20 note. Following a public nomination which attracted 30,000 suggestions, the list has been whittled down to 592 candidates.

In May the Bank of England governance stated that it wanted to tribute Britain’s achievements in visual and literary arts. British cultural figureheads who have made the final list include actor Lawrence Olivier, director Alfred Hitchcock and fashion designer Alexander McQueen.

All candidate nominations will be submitted to the BoE Governor Mark Carney for revision, the final decision on the face of £20 is expected to be announced next spring.
