Following this week’s sacking of Barclays CEO Antony Jenkins, William Hill have opened its market on the bank’s next leader.
The bookmaker has placed Group Finance Director Tushar Morzaria as evens money favourite to be the new leader of the ‘Big 4’ bank.
Barclays’ new chairman John McFarlane (nicknamed Mac the Knife) axed Jenkins after three years leading the banking group. Business news sources report that Jenkins was at the centre of a boardroom rift regarding the banks performance and future growth strategy.
Furthermore news sources report that McFarlane took the decision to sack Jenkins after losing patience with the board’s indecision regarding the firm’s leadership.
McFarlane who has been with Barclays less than three months, has outlined that he wants aggressive expansion to be undertaken by the firm. Barclays would therefore require a leader with a ‘new set of skills’ to match the Chairman’s ambitions and expectations.
William Hill’s CEO market sees competitor Lloyds Banking Group CEO Antonio Horta Oserio as second favourite to take on the Barclays leadership. The man dubbed as the ‘Jose Mourinho’ of the banking world has been placed at 4/1.
Thomas King the current Barclays CEO of Investment Banking has been placed as joint third favourite (10/1) with former National Bank of Australia CEO Cameron Clyne
William Hill Press Officer Joe Crilly commented on the market
“Given the nature of Jenkins’ dismissal, there is probably a shortlist drawn up to replace him already and the betting suggests that Tushar Morzaria heads that list,” said William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly.
