The Irish Times has reported that soon to retire Smurfit Kappa CEO Gary McGann is keen to become next Chairman of Paddy Power Plc, replacing current incumbent Nigel Northridge.
Northridge who has been the Irish bookmakers Chairman since 2009 has given no indication that he is to step down from the position. McGann who will retire from packaging multi-national Smurfit Kappa in August has reportedly inquired with regards to taking over as Chairman once the position is available.
McGann has advised Paddy Power as a Non-Executive Director and a member of the company’s Audit Committee, which he was appointed to in November 2014.
McGann has held governance positions in leading Irish businesses Aer Lingus (Air Travel) were he served as CEO and as one-time Director of the Anglo Irish Bank (finance).
McGann would not comment on Paddy Power when queried by the Irish Times
“There are a number of things I would still like to do in the business sphere. I don’t want to be a hurler on the ditch. I don’t want to be simply dispensing wisdom to people, nor be in the full cut and thrust of executive life. But perhaps somewhere in the middle,” he said
