Al Basti Equiworld, the UAE’s leading distributor of horse feeds, supplements and equine veterinary products has announced support for one of British racing’s most important charities, Greatwood.

In a three-year agreement managed by Berkshire-based sports consultancy Sportsguide, Al Basti Equiworld will provide funding to enable the charity to expand its educational programmes which will begin with the construction of the Al Basti Equiworld Classroom and provision for the appointment of a full-time Special Educational Needs teacher.

Helen Yeadon who founded Greatwood with her husband Michael in 1993 as a self-funded operation dedicated to re-homing ex-racehorses said, “We are thrilled to have the support of Al Basti Equiworld.

“The addition of a second classroom will enable us to increase our capacity and also mean that we can offer support of a more dedicated nature to some of the most socially and educationally disadvantaged children in our community.”

Since launching Horsepower in 2006 Greatwood has developed a wide range of educational programmes which use interaction with animals, including retired and rescued racehorses, to teach national curriculum subjects and life skills to vulnerable and ‘at risk’ children and young adults from five to 24 years of age.

Al Basti Equiworld founder Malih Al Basti said, “I visited Greatwood earlier this year and I was very impressed by their work.

“The educational programmes provide opportunities for children who find it difficult to cope in mainstream education and give added purpose to the lives of horses who have finished their racing careers.”
