La Liga giants Real Madrid have made history by becoming the first sports club with an ‘Official Story’ on popular social media platform, Snapchat.

This is a continuation of Real’s efforts to expand their social media coverage. This will launch to coincide with El Clasico, the ever anticipated showdown between Barcelona and Real Madrid,  which takes place this weekend in the Spanish capital. Snapchat will seek to capture this for an official story.

Fans will be encouraged to get involved by submitting their own snaps. The club have also launched their own Snapchat account this week, and it’s achieved considerable attention already with an average of 200,000 views per story posted.

Rafael de los Santos, Head of Digital at Real Madrid, said of the news: “We keep an eye on every single social media network and have seen how Snapchat has been growing and growing in the past few months, especially with millennials.”

“We are very keen on taking advantage of every single channel out there to communicate with our fans and capture the next generation of fan. We have 450 million fans around the world. Our goal is to reach every single one of them,” he continued.

From Snapchat’s point of view this deal caps an astounding 2015, and is perhaps an indication of the path they’ll be looking to continue down next year.
