6 of the Best – NCPG’s Keith Whyte

This week’s 6 of the Best comes from Keith Whyte, Executive Director of the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG).

Read on to discover about audio and visual dilemmas, a Luc Besson spectacular and stumbling upon a moving march for equality in the French capital.

Best Holiday

Years ago my wife and I happened to be in Paris on July 4 (our Independence Day) and quite by accident came upon the Paris chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars marching across the Champs Elysse to lay a wreath at the Arc de Triumph.  They were African-American WWII veterans who didn’t want to go back to a still-segregated America after the war. Sobering and utterly moving reminder that freedom isn’t free, and that the struggle for equality continues.

Best Album

So many to choose, but I have to go with Jimmy Buffett’s Songs You Know By Heart.  The Getaway by Red Hot Chili Peppers is my favourite from the past few years.

Best Sporting Experience

Watching DC United win the inaugural MLS Cup in a torrential downpour at RFK Stadium.

Best Film

The visual style and sly humour of the Fifth Element by Luc Besson is amazing, Fight Club by David Fincher is a close second.

Best Book

At lot of my wanderlust comes from reading James Clavell’s Shogun at a young age.  I still get lost in the world-building, heroism and magic of The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien.  Picture This by Joseph Heller is a darkly funny meditation on history, philosophy, art and one of the most thought-provoking books I’ve ever read.  Old Man’s War by John Scalzi is my favourite novel by my favourite sci-fi author.

Best Bet/App

Since I bet very rarely I’ll talk about my favourite app, which is a simple Color Note that allows me to jot down and organise notes, lists & reminders—critical when you’re always on the go.
