Just a few weeks ago, Microgaming signed a licensing agreement with Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc., brokered by Creative Licensing Corporation, which gave them exclusive rights to the Tarzan™ name for online slot games.
SBC News were interested to find out more about Microgaming’s interest in the Tarzan name, how it relates to the newly released film, and how they expect it to compare with other summer releases. We caught up with John Quinn, Head of Casino, for a chat:
SBC: Can you estimate when the launch date will be for the new Tarzan slot game?
JQ: Our Tarzan™ online slot will be launching to Microgaming and Quickfire operators in Q4 2016. It will follow in a series of big-hitting games, with Jungle Jim – El Dorado going live in September, and Lost Vegas and Dragonz following in the months after. Our operators’ players have a lot to look forward to in the coming months!
SBC: Even with the release of the new Tarzan film, what makes you so confident that players will want to engage with a character that is more than 100 years old?
JQ: Some of the world’s most valuable and prestigious brands have continued to flourish for over a century – Coca Cola and BMW to name a couple. Brand longevity is a powerful tool, and for Tarzan to remain a household name for over 100 years is very impressive and something that is appealing to us when signing a brand agreement.
What’s brilliant about the Tarzan brand is that generation after generation are aware of this heroic character, whether they grew up with the books, saw the various television series, or are now heading to their local cinema to see the latest movie. This means the Tarzan online slot will be instantly recognisable with players, appealing to a broad audience.
We have every confidence the game will be one that players want to engage with, not only because of the brand’s appeal, but because of the slot’s accompanying game engine and features. Whilst a well-known brand may be fantastic for acquisition, we’ve always said that the game itself has to be impressive to ensure players return and continue to play. And we believe our Tarzan online slot combines a popular theme with a strong game engine, ensuring it’s a game that players want to play time and time again.
SBC: Have you had chance to watch the new film, The Legend of Tarzan, which features the likes of Margot Robbie, Samuel L Jackson and Christoph Waltz?
JQ: With work travel and a busy family life, I haven’t had the opportunity to see the film, yet! But I’ll definitely watch the movie when it’s released on DVD later in the year.
Reading up about the film, I think it’s fair to say, the most filmed character in motion picture history certainly hasn’t lost his appeal, with the film taking over $200 million at the box office worldwide, so far!
SBC: You recently launched Fish Party SNGs, a unique take on the popular Jackpot Sit & Go concept with no theoretical limits; have you seen many big wins on this throughout July?
JQ: The Fish Party SNGs have been very popular since launch, positively impacting numbers on the network. After just one week of being live, the €5 buy-in jackpot was hit, with PKR players ‘DarcyDog’, ‘Efrotato’ and ‘DameLuck’ splitting the prize pool of €27,133.52. And I’m sure there will be more wins to speak about over the coming months.
SBC: We have been keeping a close on the Microgaming releases over the summer; which of Win Sum Dim Sum, Pretty Kitty and Reel Spinner have proved the most popular so far?
JQ: All three games you’ve mentioned are very different; diverse themes, game engines and features. Therefore, when looking at performance, you can’t really compare the games like for like. But overall each have performed very well. Launched in April, Bar Bar Black Sheep has also been a top-performer on desktop and mobile; another game with a very different look and feel.
We have high hopes that our upcoming titles in H2 2016, like the aforementioned Jungle Jim – El Dorado, Dragonz, and of course Tarzan, will become player favourites. Feedback from our operators so far has been overwhelmingly encouraging.
