Success in Nigeria means playing the game with the right rhythm

SBC News Success in Nigeria means playing the game with the right rhythmJohnson Adewale Foye, Head of Operations at HSL Gaming Network Limited which runs Gobet3000, has more advice for companies planning on setting up a retail betting business in Nigeria.

From my last post, I specifically stated that companies will make a better harvest with a retail network than the online network because of some of Nigeria’s peculiarities. Here I will detail some of them:

  • The internet awareness is not too ripe to sustain such a trust in the heart of punters.
  • The highest rate of medium class and lower punters might not be able to comfortably afford to stay online for a long time and perform what actions they want.
  • Research has shown that putting a face to a service works better. Even Wakanow, who predominately do all travel bookings online, conducted a survey only to discover that more of their customers want, or rather prefer, a face and at the moment they are beginning to open walk in centres.
  • Lastly, our internet infrastructure is not strong enough as a country to sustain some level of desirability.

To create a long lasting retail network in Nigeria a lot of considerations are needed, and some of the ones I will love to share are from practical observation over time and how we have used them to yield favourable results.

  • Firstly you need to identify areas which have higher potential of returns.
  • You need to participate with the locality for proper acceptance and easy penetration.
  • Build proper company-branded shop(s) to show the prospect of the company.
  • Have a user friendly product that the people can relate with anytime.
  • Also bring proper visibility of the company’s brand and what its stands for.
  • Lastly for now, you need to look between the lines for unspoken words then address it fast or another competitor will do and move ahead of you.

I have also discovered that State to State differs from what is valued and what is not valued. For example in the Eastern States, you don’t open shops on Sunday mornings because religion plays a vital role and ALL parties will definitely go to church first before coming to work, even staffs employed will never come to work expect after church. A particular place even showed something different, it is the ladies that will NEVER show up on Sundays, so agents tend to pay the boys a little higher so they can come to work on Sundays. So practical planning is necessary in everything you do as regards to retail building in Nigeria.

Lastly, I will love to share that the reason why some particular operators are getting it right is because they tend to play the game with the right rhythm. Success is not far from us if we can follow these things in a specific and particular order. I welcome you to a palace of possibilities even in the face of struggle.
