Gibraltar Government to review telecom infrastructure after fire at the Water Port Station.

firegibraltarGibraltar government officials are set to launch an urgent review into its telecom infrastructure following the Easter Sunday fire at the Water Port Station.

The fire disrupted the services and operations of numerous igaming operators, including Betfred, BetVictor and Ladbrokes. Website operations were affected by the fire as several operators could not accept wagers on a busy Sunday of sports

Speaking to the Gibraltar Chronicle Fabian Picardo, Chief Minister for the region commented “What I am most concerned about is the apparent failure of additional services, such as parts of the telecommunications infrastructure,

“we are not satisfied that these worked as we would have expected that they should and I am going to ensure these processes are reviewed immediately”

Gibraltar based telecommunications provider Gibtele, have given further explanation as to why the fire had impacted business services in the region. The telecoms provider revealed that a power surge caused by the fire damaged stand-by generators and related electrical equipment, in turn the power grid did not have enough electricity supply to power the numerous igaming operators based in the region.

Adrian Moreno, COO at Gibtele  stated “This impacted several online gaming companies, whose equipment the company hosts in its data centres [and] who were without Gibtelecom service for two of the six of more hours of the general electricity blackout,”,.
