Greg Dyke, the Chairman of the English Football Association (The FA), commented that a complete ban of betting by English Football registered players may be introduced.
Speaking to BBC Late Kick Off North West, Dyke commented: “No final decision has been made, but it a complete ban is one of the things that’s being discussed,” Dyke told BBC Late Kick Off North West The FA is looking again at the whole of betting and who should be allowed to bet on football in the football industry. In the next few weeks, we’ll come out with a policy.”
On 10 March2013, Newcastle United’s Dan Gosling admitted breaching FA conduct rule clause E8(b) of the FA’s governance guidelines, professional players are prohibited to use, or pass on, information related to football that is not publicly available and could be used for gambling purposes. Other players who have breached rule E8 include, Tottenham Hotspurs winger Andros Townsend and Crystal Palace midfielder Cameron Jerome.
In recent months English football has been rocked by allegations of match fixing and misconduct regarding football players and betting regulations. Greg Dyke commented that a review of the current rules regarding betting by football professionals was needed.
“I don’t think anyone knows how bad it is, because unless we find it or someone else finds it and it is brought to our attention, we don’t know.I think recent events, though, have suggested to us that we need to take it very seriously and that’s what we’re doing.”
“The FA is looking again at the whole of betting and who should be allowed to bet on football in the football industry,” he explained. “In the next few weeks, we’ll come out with a policy.”
