Denmark’s gambling and national lottery monopoly operator Danske Spil has announced the inbound appointment of Peter Christensen as new Chairman.
A former MP for Denmark’s Venstre Liberal Party, Christensen has previously served as Minister of Taxation (2011) and Minister of Defence (2015) under the cabinet of former Danish PM Lars Løkke Rasmussen.
The appointment was confirmed by Nicolai Wammen, Denmark’s Finance Minister, with Christensen due to replace long-term Danske Spil Chairman Peter Gæmelke, who will end his 10-year tenure leading the monopoly operator’s board of governance.
Taking on his new remit, Christensen has confirmed that he will resign as a non-executive director of lottery counterpart Det Danske Klasselotteris (Denmark Class Lotteries) during the second of half of 2020.
Danske Spil board members have unanimously backed the appointment of Christensen, stating that the monopoly operator has secured an ideal figurehead to lead its operations in facing new challenges and social responsibilities.
Christensen issued the following statement on his appointment: “It is a great privilege to help secure the financial foundation Danish sports and further social directive which I have personally benefited from.
“It is very important to me that gambling games remain as an entertainment feature. Danske Spil has an important social role in continuing to ensure a balanced and responsible gaming market in Denmark.”
