Galway Races hits record prize money target for 2017 Festival

Ballybrit Galway racecourse management has confirmed that the 2017 Galway Races Summer Festival (31 July – 6 August) will feature its biggest prize pool with a record €2 million in festival prize money.

Galway Races event organisers were pleased to have secured the record prize money target with more than a month to go until the Festival start date. With 52 races planned over a week, each festival day will feature a minimum prize fund of €100,000 for its feature race.

Flagship races include the €250,000 ‘Tote Ireland Galway Plate’ held on Wednesday 2 August, which has been boosted with a further €30,000 in prize money.

Michael Moloney, the General Manager of Galway Racecourse, said, “It’s a huge credit to our sponsors and Horse Racing Ireland who with their support have enabled us to offer for the very first time a feature race every day valued at a minimum of €100,000.

Galway Races legacy sponsor Guinness continues its commitment to the festival sponsoring Thursday 3 August’s ‘Galway Hurdle’ worth €300,000. The famous stout brewer will also continue to sponsor ‘Ladies Day’ on Friday, with its feature race the ‘Guinness Galway Handicap’.

Director of Racing of Horse Racing Ireland, Jason Morris, thanked all Galway Races sponsors for their continued commitment to Irish racing’s most popular event

“HRI is pleased to be supporting the Galway Festival with an increased prize money contribution to match the additional race sponsorship that the racecourse has been able to attract. It is very satisfying that the minimum value for all feature races at the festival has been increased to €100,000 for 2017.

“Prize money has risen significantly at the Galway Festival in recent years and it is only appropriate that winners at Ballybrit are adequately rewarded at all levels given the extremely competitive nature of the racing.”
