AFC Ajax the Netherlands biggest football club has announced that it has recruited top Dutch FIFA eSports pro Koen Weijland, to be its first ever ‘eSports Representative’.
The signing of Weijland was unveiled by Ajax Football Director and former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin Van Der Sar, at a press conference hosted at the Amsterdam Arena.
Weijland was presented with the club 39 jersey, as its official eSports representative Weijland will promote and play as Ajax at national and international eSports tournaments.
Weijland a popular figure within the Dutch eSports community, will further promote Ajax initiatives throughout his YouTube channel and additional social media verticals.
Seeking to increase the club’s profile towards burgeoning eSports audiences, Ajax becomes the latest European football club to sign an eSports pro, following the footsteps of Manchester City, Valencia CF, West Ham United and Schalke 04.
Edwin van der Sar commented on Weijland joining AFC Ajax
“Koen is a multiple time FIFA champion that inspires youth and has a personality that fits our club here at Ajax. We are always looking for new ways as a club to bind us to our young fans. We will be helping Koen with support not only in major tournaments, but also organising activities with our fans. We believe it is important to encourage both digital and real football. These two worlds can perfectly coexist and compliment each other.”
