The Brazil 2014 World Cup has aided a recovery in the French igaming market, with the market posting year on year growth for the second quarter of 2014.
French gambling regulators L’Autorité de Régulation des Deux en Ligne (ARJEL), stated that the market had seen revenues rise 10% on 2013 figures to € 180.5 million (£142 million). Higher wagering had helped half-year earnings to increase by 1% to €355.5m (£280.5 million).
Charles Coppolani, President of ARJEL, stated that the improved performance had been driven by World Cup 2014 betting. French sports betting operators had seen improved betting performance on Brazil 2014 matches, with French licenced operators averaging €1.5 million wagers per match. This represents a marked improvement on South Africa 2010 World Cup matches which averaged € 1 million
Coppolani commented “Average bet placed did not increase. Bet wagered remain 10 to 18 Euros per game, which are in line with Ligue 1 betting trends. However the market saw an increase in casual gamers who flocked to place bets during this World Cup
