New Zealand’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has confirmed the re-appointment of Graeme Reeves as Chief Gambling Commissioner.

Reeves, a commercial lawyer with experience in commercial and property law, previously served as a director of the Airways Corporation for New Zealand and spent time as a director of New Zealand Post.

The re-appointment of Reeves is announced as New Zealand Racing urges the government to clamp down on remote gambling operators’ targeting national consumers. In May Racing Minister Nathan Guy announced that a national police task force had been created to tackle unlicensed gambling operators.

State owned New Zealnd TAB, has further criticised current national gambling laws and frameworks, stating that the country was losing vital tax revenues as remote operators become more popular with national consumers.

Reeves is set to examine current national gambling provisions and the monitoring of online gambling operators, reporting to the Ministry of Internal Affairs on research.

New Zealand’s Gambling Commission is an independent statutory decision-making body. The Commission hears casino licensing applications, and appeals on licensing and enforcement decisions made by the Secretary of Internal Affairs in relation to gaming machines and other non-casino gambling activities.
