Chinese news sources have reported that the six licensed Macau casino operators are set to increase employee salaries by a minimum of 5%, as the casino operators look to overcome a potential 2015 labour shortage in the Asian Gambling hub

This week SJM Holdings stated to staff tha they would recieve a 5% pay rise in 2015. SJM Holdings will be the first of the six licensed casino operators to improve employee benefits for the new year, according to labor union Forefront of Macau Gaming (FMG).

“We welcome the company sharing its gains with employees despite falling gaming revenue,” said FMG vice president Le Kuck Keong. We are not greedy civil servants are getting a 6.75 percent pay rise in 2015. We look forward to good news from the other five casino firms.”

SJM also agreed to reward interns with contracts and add “tea benefits” to the base for determining the amount of provident funds, holiday pay and severance compensation.

The move follows a string of protests last year involving thousands of workers demanding better salaries and working conditions. Calls for higher pay have become louder especially as a labor shortage looms in Macau, where eight resorts will rise in the next three years.

These include the second phase of Galaxy Macau slated for the middle of the year, followed by Parisian Macao of Sands China (employees 1928) and Studio City Resort of Melco Crown. In August, Galaxy announced salary increases averaging 20 percent for its 16,000 workers which are expected to trim its profit margin by 1 to 1.5 percent.

AMTD Financial Planning general manager Kenny Tang Sing-hing said Wynn (employees 1128), MGM China Holdings (employees 2282), Sands and Melco are set to follow with their own pay rises.
