Paddy Power, part owners of race hores Slade Power and Sole Power, who are set to run in Saturday’s July Cup at Newmarket, have issued a twitter charity challenge to American Football star Wes Welker, who owns US raider Undrafted in the same Group 1 contest.

Welker is a wide receiver and return specialist for the Denver Broncos of the National Football League (NFL). A lot of American sportsmen go through a draft system where they are selected from college by professional teams, but Welker was undrafted in 2004 out of Texas Tech before debuting for San Diego Chargers later that year – hence the name of his horse.

The Irish bookmaker has offered to give €5,000 to a charity of Welker’s choice if Undrafted beats Slade Power OR Sole Power, while he has asked the sportsman to give the same amount to Special Olympics Ireland if Undrafted can’t beat either of the Power horses.

Paddy Power said: “Wes has shown just what a good sport he is by accepting my charity twitter challenge and I very much look forward to meeting him at the July Course and hopefully, picking up a nice cheque from him for a worthy cause.”

QPR’s Joey Barton recently took journalist Piers Morgan to the cleaners, all in the name of charity. He correctly predicted Germany’s hammering of the hosts, while Morgan tweeted: “I backed Brazil to win, Fred to score & declared Luiz my man of the tournament. I feel a complete and utter prat.”
