New York Giants Co-owner John Mara has stated his opposition to New Jersey attempts to legalise sports betting. In a public address John Mara stated that the New York Giants management would oppose to back any attempts by New Jersey senators and representatives to legalise sports betting within their state.
Mara has further expressed that his stance is supported by other New York professional sport franchises. Mara had been critical of New Jersey senators attempts to bypass the recent federal rejection by the US Supreme Court.
In June 2014, New Jersey Democratic Party Senator, Ray Lesniak stated that his state could be able to bypass the imposed Supreme Court rejection, due to legal technicalities regarding US state laws concerning sports betting wagering.
Lesniak stated that New Jersey officials would study the bypassing of sports betting sanctions, and that New Jersey Casinos and racetracks would be able to offer in-house wagering on sports betting, if they did not adhere to the technicalities of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act – PASPA.
John Mara criticised the Governors actions, stating that New Jersey would be in danger of breaking federal laws, only for the short term gain of a few New Jersey Politicians. Mara expressed further concern regarding the policing and monitoring of sports betting in New Jersey, which he believes would be a threat to professional sports within the state of New York.
“Well, certainly we’re opposed to it, but let’s wait and see what happens,” Mara said. “They’re trying all these different ways to circumvent the law”.
