Anthony Joshua favourite for SPOTY 2017

Coral has already started taking bets for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2017 and has made Anthony Joshua the 11-4 favourite to take the crown.

Andy Murray won this year’s to become the first person to hit a SPOTY hat-trick but is priced at 4/1 to retain it once more next year.

Joshua is set for a mammoth year. His showdown with Wladimir Klitchsko on home turf at Wembley in April and a win will see him in good stead to hold the WBA, WBA, IBF and WBO titles at the same time this year. He’s priced at 7/1 with Coral for this to occur in 2017.

Elsewhere in boxing, David Haye is evens to win a world title whilst Amir Khan is odds-on at 4-7 to pick up one of the four full world titles.

Of other potential SPOTY contenders, the recently knighted Mo Farah is odds-on at 1-2 to win double gold at the London World Athletics Championship in the 5000m and 10,000m events. Jessica Ennis-Hill, who herself became a Dame alongside Farah and Murray’s knighthoods, is 4-1 to come out of retirement and compete in London.

Coral’s John Hill commented: “The betting suggests Anthony Joshua could be set for a big 2017 as he is our early favourite to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award. We’ve taken a flurry of bets on the IBF title holder becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world next year, while he is the warm favourite to beat Wladimir Klitschko in April at Wembley.

“Mo Farah is set to retire after the World Athletics Championship and we make him odds-on to go out on a high in London by winning double gold.”
